What is an AI VTuber?
An AI VTuber (AI Virtual YouTuber) is a livestreamer whose personality, voice, and actions are driven entirely by artificial intelligence. Unlike traditional VTubers - who are human performers behind a virtual avatar - AI VTubers are powered by large language models (LLMs), text-to-speech engines, and real-time animation systems, creating a fully autonomous digital entertainer that streams, chats, and plays games on its own. For example: Moonlash, made by Khaos, is a 3D-modeled red-haired demon who reacts to Twitch chat, observes games, sings karaoke, and roasts her own developer - all without a human controlling.
The AI VTuber phenomenon exploded into mainstream culture in December 2022 when British programmer Vedal987 (commonly known as Vedal) launched Neuro-sama on Twitch.
